I am trying to remember when I bought a ready-to-wear Halloween costume. I love getting creative and using what I have on hand to make my own. Here are 5 DIY Halloween costume ideas I’ve made in the past – tell me which is your favorite!
Daenerys Targaryen and Her Dragons
This was my very first DIY Halloween costume idea, and definitely a favorite! I shared a tutorial on making these no-sew dragon dog costumes where I turned my three sweet fur babies into ferocious, fire-breathing dragons. Then I repurposed my evening wedding dress and wore this wig to be the powerful Daenerys Targaryen!
Wednesday Addams
This DIY Halloween costume idea was made on a whim, and it’s probably one of my most popular ones ever! First, I layered a white button-up shirt under this black dress. Next, I braided two pigtails, wore black tights, and put on these black boots – everything I had in my closet already, so easy!
Baby Unicorn
My first DIY Halloween costume for a baby girl! I can’t believe Olivia was only two months here. I got this pink tutu dress as a hand-me-down. I cut out felt fabric as unicorn eyes and lashes and sewed them onto the dress. For the unicorn horn, I used glitter cardstock to make a cylinder and secured it to an infant headband. For the flowers, I bought these appliques that were easy to stick to the cardstock! So easy and adorable!
Witch, Cat, & Ghost
This was such a fun family costume to make! I had a ton of leftover felt fabric, so similar to the unicorn hat. I cut it to make it into a cylinder shape, and then I cut a circle for the brim. Glued it onto a headband, and I have the cutest and wickedest witch in the crew!
I wore an all-black dress for my cat costume and did super simple cat makeup using eyeliner. Then I made cat ears with the remaining felt and adhered it to a black headband!
My favorite part of all was Jeff wearing a white sheet over him to be a ghost. We didn’t want to ruin our sheets by cutting eye cutouts for them, so he wore sunglasses over them, lol.
Squid Games
Remember when Squid Games was all the rage? It was so exciting to see an Asian show get so much attention in the media and see characters that looked like me! I knew it had to be our family Halloween costume last year.
Mine and the fur babies Squid Game player tracksuits are here and here. I used Cricut iron-on vinyl and Cricut Heat Press to make out player numbers. I was 456 (because, duh, main character energy lol), Tails, who was 15 years old at the time, was Player 001, and Boba, our feisty little Yorkie, is Player 212.
Olivia was the red light green light doll, and her costume was obviously the best! She pulled it off perfectly and creepily, lol. I got this overall corduroy dress that could be worn for fall photos, and the yellow collared shirt is from Amazon.
Jeff dressed up as a red guard from Squid Games. He already had a red sweatshirt and pants on hand. I used one of his black shirts and ironed on vinyl for the triangle to make his mask – simple and easy!
