Amelia’s studio newborn photos came back to us just in time for her one-month-old celebration! There were so many adorable ones – I couldn’t help but share a bunch! These are definitely going to be framed and turned into a gallery wall!

Vietnamese One-Month-Old Celebration
Amelia is officially one month old as of January 12, 2023! The one-month-old celebration is called day thang and is a significant milestone in Vietnamese culture. Infant mortality rates were historically high in Vietnam so people would celebrate the baby and her health once she reaches one month old. To this day, day thang is still important so we celebrated with a family hot pot dinner at home!

Vietnamese Postpartum Confinement
The first postpartum month is very crucial for moms in the Vietnamese culture. We call it the “sitting” or “confinement” month where mom and baby don’t leave the house and focus on resting and healing. During this time, the mom needs to work on warming the uterus, which means eating lots of warm foods like soup and not drinking cold water or eating cold fruits and vegetables. Mom also isn’t supposed to shower for a month or do any housework, and is supposed to only care for the baby when needed. There are several other restrictions but it depends on each family how restrictive they want to be and what practices they want to implement. In Vietnam and some other Asian countries, there are confinement nannies and birth centers that will help moms meet these objectives. I wish we had something like this in Seattle!
For my Vietnamese confinement month, I stayed home for the month and only went out a few times for doctors appointments. It was hard and I was definitely getting cabin fever. I also refrained from eating fruits – I missed them so much! But other than that, I still showered every day and did some light housework. In modern days, it’s definitely hard to fully follow traditional Vietnamese confinement practices!

Family Studio Newborn Photos
How precious are these newborn photos with the whole family? I think it’s so important to capture pictures of these super early stages. Even though the newborn stage can be tough, it goes by so fast and they’re never this small again. My heart completely melts for the sister shots! I hope they grow up to be the best of friends.
