One of my favorite activities to do during the holidays is decorating gingerbread houses. It’s such a fun activity to do with friends and family and get in the holiday spirit. But what to do with them afterward? I have this fun and simple idea for you! This easy DIY Christmas village jar incorporates decorating mini gingerbread houses and then displaying them in a super cute way with glass jars for the holiday season! Check out the tutorial below!
Supplies You’ll Need for DIY Christmas Village Jars
- Mini gingerbread house kit (2) (another option)
- One-gallon glass jars (3)
- Two-gallon glass jars (2)
- Sugar or epsom salt to use as snow
- Bottlebrush Christmas trees (1 set)
- Fairy lights
DIY Christmas Village Jar Steps
1. Make Gingerbread Houses
First, put together your gingerbread houses. I like to assemble them a day before so that they can be set overnight and be really sturdy. I got two of these mini gingerbread house kits, which worked out well because I messed up on a few houses and some pieces came broken. Each kit came with five houses, icing, and decorations. I used this holiday treat topper set as well. I ended up using seven total gingerbread houses for the five glass jars.
2. Clean Glass Jars
You’ll need some glass jars. I used a total of five – three one-gallon glass jars and two two-gallon glass jars. I like having a mix of sizes for visual interest. Make sure to wash and completely dry them before starting this DIY so that you can clearly see what you’re displaying inside and the sugar/salt doesn’t stick!
3. Add Sugar or Salt for Snow
Pour in sugar or epsom salt to use as snow. I poured them about a third or fourth of the glass jars, but it’s totally up to you how you want to do it!
4. Decorate Glass Jars
Now add in your gingerbread houses, mini bottle brush Christmas trees, and any other decor! In the one-gallon glass jar, I used one gingerbread house and one bottle brush Christmas tree. In the two-gallon glass jar, I fit in two gingerbread houses and one tree. Have fun with it and decorate however you like! Lastly, don’t forget to add in the fairy lights to make it extra magical and festive.
How cute are these DIY Christmas village jars? Display them in your kitchen, bar cart, or dining table. They also smell amazing if you open them up – gingerbread and sugar? Yes, please! I’ll be sharing how I use these as centerpieces in this gingerbread decorating party!
