Two engagement shoots, two different photographers, and four outfits later, I have picked up on several tips on what to wear for engagement photos! I’m sharing these helpful tips as well as photos from our casual winter engagement shoot!
All photos by Sam and Sola Lee unless otherwise stated
1. Complement each other
When deciding on what to wear for engagement photos, think about outfits that complement each other. What this means is wearing colors that go well together, but don’t be too matchy matchy. Wearing too much of the same color or wearing the same prints will either blend together or be too overpowering. For instance, in these photos I’m wearing burgundy and beige on top while Jeff is wearing olive and denim. All of these colors complement one another and are great for the PNW winter vibe we’re going for. In our formal winter engagement photos, Jeff is wearing navy, which complements perfectly with my pink gown. Some of my favorite color combos include black and camel, navy and pink, red and camel.

2. Keepin’ it classy
In addition to complementing one another, stick to clothing items that are classic and simple. When looking back at your engagement photos, you don’t want to think, “What the heck was I wearing?!” I would avoid super trendy clothes and keep the outfit classic! Wearing solids is always the safest bet, but you can always try subtle patterns as well. You want to shine in the photos, but not let busy prints overpower them.

3. Wear A-line dresses and skirts
If you don’t know what to wear for engagement photos and want to dress up a little bit, you can never go wrong with an A-line dress or skirt. They accentuate your waist and look great on all shapes and sizes. If the dress or skirt is flowy, it’ll also add movement to your photos. Twirling photos are always fun and beautiful! This photo was shot by KSL Wedding and you can see the entire post here.

4. It’s all in the details
The little details count. Wear a necklace, bracelet, rings, or pretty earrings. For him, he could wear a scarf, belt, or pocket square. These accessories will add interest and dimension to your photos, especially close up ones. He can also wear a tie that’s the same color of your top to tie the whole theme together. For our holiday festive engagement photos, I wore red nail polish and gold accessories. For our winter formal engagement photos, I wore a faux fur stole, and I love how it adds glamour and texture.

5. Bring on the props
Props allow you to get different photos and poses so bring a few to play around with! Think of items like a blanket, clear umbrella, flowers, and a champagne bottle. We love how our champagne popping photos turned out!

6. Look and feel confident
The last and most important tip for what to wear for engagement photos is to feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. If you feel unsure, it’s going to show in your photos. So be confident and let that shine through!
For me, I have no waist since I have a very straight figure and that makes me look larger in photos. To help with this, I typically wear A-line dresses or skirts, or flowy tops. If you don’t like your arms, consider capped or long sleeves. Heels will elongate your legs. So dress your body appropriately and rock that confidence! And of course, have fun with it all!
