I briefly talked about this a while ago in this post, but I wanted to provide an update on whether it’s worth it to shop at Shein. I get asked about shopping here a lot, so in this Shein review, I’m talking about what you should know and what you should be careful of when shopping on this site!
Before we get into the details of this Shein review, I want to quickly share this adorable outfit. Both the scallop top and scallop skirt are from Shein and, if you can believe it, were under $25 total! The prices are insane and you can really score some amazing deals. I love both items I received from Shein and the fabric feels really nice and high quality. But to be transparent, it can be difficult to find items like these, and these were the only two that I liked out of the other eight items I ordered. Shopping at Shein can be a hit or miss so let’s get into the details of what you should look for when you shop here.
Sizing: The key tip to shopping at Shein is to really know your measurements. You can do this using a tape measure and measure yourself (how to measure your body for clothing sizes), or have a tailor do it for you. Sizing at Shein is very inconsistent so you need to reference the measurement table for every item and choose the sizing that will fit you best. To give you an idea of how inconsistent sizing is, I’ve gotten a top that was one size fits all and it ended up fitting like an XXS. This has happened several times to me where an item doesn’t work out because of poor sizing and fit.
Quality: Quality is also inconsistent at Shein. For instance, there are some items where the quality just deteriorates after only one wash in the washer. On the other hand, I have a few items that are in very good shape after tons of washes and I still wear them! My tip is to only buy items where there are a lot of reviews and photos of customers wearing the item. You can get an idea of the fit and whether the item looks like what it does in photos. For quality comparison, I would say shopping at Shein is like shopping at Forever 21.
Shipping + Returns: Shipping time has slightly improved over the years. It used to take over a month or more for me to receive an order. According to their updated shipping terms, you should now receive your order 6-17 business days after placing your order. As for returns, you only get your first ever return free and it’s $7.99 after that. I don’t know if this means you get one free return for each order you place, and any subsequent returns from that order has a fee. Or do you really only get one free return ever? To be honest, Shein has always gifted me my items so I don’t have to return anything even if I don’t like them.
Selection + Pricing: You definitely can’t beat the incredibly low prices that Shein offers. They have such a huge selection of clothes and accessories – a lot of their products are dupes of other popular items you see from Nordstrom or what’s trending on major bloggers, but at a MAJOR fraction of the price.
Is it worth it?: Based on what I shared in this Shein review, I would only recommend shopping at Shein if you want to save money, know your measurements, find products with a large number of reviews, are not in a hurry to receive your order, AND are okay with inconsistent quality. Otherwise, I wouldn’t risk purchasing clothes here. Especially if an item doesn’t have any reviews, there’s a chance the ordered item isn’t what you expected (which has happened to me many times) and shipping/returns take a long time. I also hear customer service can be terrible.

I really appreciate this review, as I haven’t shopped at Shein myself. I have heard very mixed reviews, mostly bringing up the same issues you did. It seems like a great option for someone on a budget but maybe not the best choice if you have the option to shop inexpensively locally. Shein’s sizing seems so hard to get right!
Such a great review and loving your honesty here – I made the same experiences mostly at SheIn. Sometimes, the pieces are truly amazing and worth waiting for. Sometimes, the quality and sizing was just awful… So I guess checking for reviews is key 🙂

great review, I like shopping at shein, prices are good and products are very cute but unfortunately not all their items last long after a few washes, which is the down aspect for me. I usually end up getting twice the same item lol

The tips about reading reviews, knowing your size, and being aware of risks are good ones.
I have never shopped at Shein before, but I have shopped at Forever 21.
So many times the very feminine fashions I like are sold at very expensive stores. I have had some bad shopping experiences at both inexpensive and very expensive retailers. Once I was sent a pair of full briefs from a ‘luxury lingerie’ retailer that was so small it could not have fit on an infant. After reading your post and knowing the risks I would probably still give Shein a try if I liked the look of the outfit piece(s), if the pieces had decent reviews.

This is such a great buying guide for navigating Shein. I used to buy from them when they first started shipping to the US (when it used to take a month to get orders) and returns were just not a thing. The quality was so hit or miss and the stock photos didn’t always match what product was received. It’s so crazy to think how much the site and selection has changed to adapt to the US market ever since and your tips for buying there are spot on. Measurements are KEY!!
