I guess what they say is true – April showers brings May flowers! It sure does rain a lot but the beautiful flowers that bloom from it make the dreadful weather totally worth it. Not only do we have a tulips field (post from two years ago, I’ll post new photos from this year’s visit later), but we also get cherry blossoms in April! I’m sharing tips on how to see UW cherry blossoms, which is one of the best places to see them in Seattle!
University of Washington (UW), which is where I went to school, is famous for its rows of cherry blossoms and the beautiful architecture surrounding them. People flock to see UW cherry blossoms every year. I surprisingly haven’t been back during cherry blossom season since I started my blog. But after going this year, I remember why I stayed away. The crowds are insane on the weekends, especially since it was one of the first sunny Saturdays when we went! We took a ton of photos, but only several made it to this post. To be honest, it was tough getting that perfect shot with so many people around. I can’t tell you how many photos we have with a crying baby or a random stranger that’s walking right behind me in the background.
- Be sure to check out the UW Quad Cam to get updates on the cherry blossoms. Timing of when they bloom can be unpredictable. One year, it bloomed in late March, and another, the second week of April.
- Go on a week day, if possible, to avoid the crowds and easily find parking. Like I mentioned, the weekends are chaotic and it’ll be hard to get good photos and parking spots.
- To get the best lighting on a sunny day, go early in the morning or 1-2 hours before the sun sets to avoid harsh lighting. If it’s a cloudy day, be sure to go when there’s still light out to avoid dark and grainy photos.
- Don’t forget to shoot up to get a better view of you and the cherry blossoms. Have your friend or photographer kneel and tilt the top of the camera/phone towards the friend/photographer. That’s how Jeff got the close up photos of me and the cherry blossoms!
Tell me where your favorite local spot to see cherry blossoms is! I would love to go back to Japan during sakura season!

Ah yes the University of Washington such a beautiful campus. I had roommates that went there when I lived in Seattle for a summer in my last of college–I was going to school in NY. You look great in this and love how it matches with the cherry blossoms. Gorgeous photography too!
