Long Cardigan and the Third-Piece Rule

sun and shadow long cardigan, denim shorts, caged sandals sun and shadow long cardigan sun and shadow long cardigan, denim shorts, caged sandals
Top: Banana Republic (similar here)
Shorts: BLANKNYC (similar here, here)
Sweater: Sun and Shadow Long Cardigan on sale! (also love this)
Shoes: Gentle Souls Break My Heart Caged Sandals on sale!
Necklace: Madewell (similar here)

I wore this summer outfit a couple of weeks ago and am just getting around to posting it! It’s a pretty simple look with a slight festival, boho feel. I initially just had on these denim shorts and a flutter top but felt like it was missing something. So I threw on this crochet long cardigan for a layered touch and to complete the look. The long cardigan is thick, comfy, and fits true to size. It definitely came in handy when it got chilly at night! I’m looking forward to transitioning this long cardigan to fall with a pair of jeans and booties. I think long cardigans in general will be huge this coming season!

Speaking of layering, have you heard of the “third-piece rule”? I recently learned about it and it totally makes sense to me! The basis of the rule is that a stylish outfit consists of three items excluding your shoes. Your top and bottoms are considered as your first two pieces. If you add a third element – like a long cardigan, blazer, additional sweater or shirt layer, or a statement accessory (scarf, hat, etc.) – it adds an interesting element to the whole outfit and makes you look more polished! The third-piece rule sounds so simple and intuitive, right? Well, I definitely didn’t think about adding a third item to my outfits during the summer especially when I’m mostly in dresses. Nonetheless, I’m excited to put the third-piece rule in major practice during fall! I think you’ll be seeing this long cardigan many more times :).

Really cute cardigan, digging the fringes. I’ve actually not heard of the “third piece rule” before but will def be more mindful about it now that I know, makes perfect sense.

I’ve never heard of the third-piece rule but it makes a lot of sense. And I can see why. No wonder no outfit to me feels finished without something extra. Thanks for the tip.

I’ve never officially heard of the third piece rule but I feel like I always try to incorporate it into my outfits, just because I feel naked without one. And love the additional of the long cardigan to play with the length of the shorts. Work it!

The third-piece rule sounds like a very, very wise one! I love introducing longline cardigans, short jackets or blazers to outfits – so long as it’s cold enough to do so (which it is, I live in the UK after all!). I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said this now, but I really, REALLY love the bright and light photography on your blog 🙂

The fringed crochet of your Sun and Shadow long cardigan is very pretty, and so is your Banana Republic flutter top. I’ll have to reflect on the “third piece rule”. It would give visitors to my blog another outfit piece to comment on once I (hopefully) get back to doing outfit posts with more regularity – speaking of which, thank you for having been patient and stopping by (I finally did a post). I really like this look. The cardigan gives a hint of fall transition and looks awesome with the shorts and sandals!

The cardigan looks amazing on you. And I’ve never heard of the ‘third piece rule’, but I’m glad that now I know it exists, haha

I haven’t heard of this rule before, but it totally makes sense! That third piece can absolutely make all the difference. Loving this cozy cardigan, Tina!

The third piece rule makes so much sense! I actually ran into that problem when I was styling an outfit and I kept thinking to myself, “this outfit is missing something…” and I was just missing my third piece! Love the outfit 🙂

I really love the boho and relaxed style of that cardigan, and I think it adds an extra something to your outfit (although it would have definitely worked without the sweater). I had never heard about the third piece rule before, but it definitely makes sense! I’ll have to keep that in mind from now on.

I’ve been looking for a cardigan like this! The three piece rule is something I’ve also followed and always worked without a doubt slapped on with some confidence. You look lovely x
